A commercial is a type of advertisement it's an announcement promoting a product. This commercial promotes Ambien CR, a sleeping pill. The video begins with a sleep deprived woman in a gloomy state. Immediately setting the dull scene because it emphasizes the idea that Ambien CR is needed to feel content. Furthermore, she had dark circles and the colors black and gray added to the somber sight. Along with this, the music began to play a soothing nighttime melody to fit the mood. These qualities are the use of pathos it conveys a feeling of desire in its audience. For instance, I feel drawn into buying the pill and thinking it's necessary to my health. Pathos works extremely well in this situation because it forms a personal connection between the speaker and audience issue. I know it's effective because my feelings are questioning by thinking, "Should I buy this?". Already showing how successful the ad has been into drawing my attention. All the sudden when she received the pill, she's smiling and well rested. As this moment the voice-over sped up stating all the side effects, which included sickness worse than being insomniac. The images didn't correspond with the horrible effects of the pills because the woman was smiling completely oblivious to what she had consumed. At this point, I would reconsider my decision from earlier and presume the ad as a joke instead of taking it seriously. I no longer have the need to buy it because its logos was unsatisfying. In the end, it wasn't effective because its logos was used poorly. An advertisement is supposed to promote an item to be bought however this chased me away. The factual information startled me due to the horrific side effects of the pill. Overall, the advertisement has failed to do its task.
All of this reminds me of when I was younger, and I wanted to buy toys I saw in advertisements. However, I didn't understand the "choking hard items" that came with the toys. As a child, I could've easily seen colorful or playful items and felt the need to buy them. My parents understood the dangers and kept them at arm's length. Although I would get disappointed when I didn't get the toy, now looking back I've realized the commercials never did an exceptional job in satisfying my parents. The same concept continues with my brother and his want to buying video games. My parents weren't happy with the violence each game portrayed in the advertisement as well as displeasing my brother. As seen, determining the success of advertising depends on its audience.
